Capture the magic of a bygone age in the heart of a bustling city - Visit 124 Street & Area today!

In 1988 the merchants of the business district, 124th Street, extending from Jasper Avenue north to 111 Avenue in central Edmonton, formed a business association. The purpose of this association was to work with the City of Edmonton to stimulate growth within the business district. Through the efforts of many members working with the Board over the years, 124th Street has physically improved with streetscaping and infrastructure work. Many businesses have seen the benefits of locating or expanding within the 124th Street business area. The vacancy rate is at an all time low, however rental rates have not been significantly affected.

Many of the businesses have been on 124th Street for years, providing specialty sales and service to Edmonton and surrounding areas.

With easy access to 124th Street, the area has become a natural business district for specialty shops, professional services, fine restaurants and bistros. 124th Street is the home of the famous "Gallery Walk", featuring some of the best art the city has to offer.

If you are looking at the Edmonton area to establish a business, we invite you to contact the 124th Street Business Association. RETAILERS NEEDED!

Good shopping districts don't just happen. It takes a vision by committed entrepreneurs who collectively want to offer unique services to the shopping public. The area must be accessible, located in an attractive area of town, and must have its salient features exploited and promoted. This describes our street. The merchants and retailers on 124th Street are diligently working to develop a street full of shops with a diversity of products and services. With over 90% of the retail space leased or occupied, our focus is on the vacant 10%.

Work like this doesn't happen in a vacuum. Our future is being designed by the 124th Business Association on behalf of its 400 members whose livelihood is very much a part of the success of 124th Street.

If this sounds like a shopping district in which you would like to hang your hat, put out your shingle or launch your innovative concepts, please contact our office.

Edmonton's West Side Story

When Malcolm Groat sold his 900 acre homestead to real estate promoters in 1903, the original West End of Edmonton was born.
The communities that developed on his homestead, Glenora, Groat Estates, Westmount and West Oliver were all linked into one suburb by the central shopping street - Edward Street - known today as the 124st Street & Area shopping district.
These communities, then separated from Edmonton by the Hudson's Bay Reserve, developed the unique identity of a small towne within a big city.

The cover photo shows 124 Street looking north towards the 102 Avenue intersection in 1939, just one of the many archival and personal photos to be found in this treasury of life in Edmonton's infancy.

Edmonton's West Side Story traces the history of the people, organizations, and institutions that shaped and created the character of one of Edmonton's oldest neighborhoods.
